John 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
It can be very hard, especially on Election Day, to remember that as a follower of Jesus, we are not citizens of this world. There has been so much coverage of the role of non-citizens in our elections over the previous months. I guess I am in violation!
Too often I drift into the thinking that regards this life as what is important, that this life is all there is. Even as a believer I slip into this thinking. I could spend my day and into the wee hours of the night watching the results of the election. But my citizenship is in the same place as Jesus’ citizenship!
Instead, as my pastor shared this past Sunday, “The Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes.” This ancient wisdom is the battle cry of my heart today. I am trusting Him. Period. I am not of this world any longer.
You see, unlike so many celebrities who have promised to leave the country following an election, I actually have transferred my citizenship. I don’t have my boarding pass yet, but I am sure at the appropriate moment, it will be printed. My citizenship is a heavenly one. And that heavenly country is even more real than any haven I might discover for expats here on this earth.
So if your heart is in anxiety at this moment, remember, you are a citizen of a more sure kingdom. Nothing can take that away from you.
