Our Purpose

Psalm 67:1-2 May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us–so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations.

People often make finding God’s will for their lives a difficult journey, needlessly. God’s will is plain. There are few complications. The problem we usually face is that we don’t really want to do God’s will. We want to do what we want to do!

Very few times did the people of God get a clear personal mission from the LORD. There are recorded exceptions. We see these and expect that in our case. We want the waters to part and the pillar of cloud and fire to appear.

But the reality is, even when the water parted and the pillar appeared, the people still didn’t do what the LORD commanded them to do. Their story is one of rebellion and disobedience. What is our story? Are we any different?

Our text tells us plainly what God’s purpose is for our holy living. We are to be the message that the world sees of God’s provision for humanity. Our lives should be shouting of his grace and blessing, of his close connection to us. Is that what the world sees?

Are we too caught up in the political solutions of our day that we miss the Gospel? We need to be focusing on His Kingdom, not on our earthly kingdoms. Our focus must be Him! Everything of this world will pass away, our best efforts blown away by the gentlest of breezes.

I love that image of our text: “make his face shine on us.” The image of an infant looking up at and seeing an adoring parent smiling. Just like the infant, we need to respond by smiling. We need to live in recognition of his grace and blessing. That is what people need to see, not the bickering and one liners.

Does His face fill your view? Is He the One you adore? When He is in the room, do you seek Him out? Fall on your knees before Him?
