Mind Set – Romans 8:5

Romans 8:5 Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.

The way we see the world has a great impact on our journey through it. If we see the world as a place filled with random accidents, then purpose and meaning would be very difficult to develop. If everything is up for grabs, flip of a coin, accidental, then how can my choices really have meaning?

If, however, you see the world as being created by a Creator with a purpose, then our lives can derive purpose from Him. He provides a grounding that then enables us to reach out and explore the world that has meaning. The great scientists of the past have seen this relationship with the Creator as the driving force for their curiosity about the world. Since He had created, then there must be a method and order to what He made, so they set out to discover that order.

So the way we see the world does change our perceptions of it. We often call this our mindset. Our mindset often shows up in our attitude toward events. We get impatient in traffic because we think other people are getting in our way and preventing the highly important things we are doing from being accomplished at the exact timing of our desire.

Paul writes about where we put our mind. If our mind is focused, set, lasered on what our physical bodies want, then all our energies will seek solutions in line with our physical bodies. If all we see is the physical, then all we can desire is what the physical can seemingly provide. No outside solutions exist.

But if we choose to set our minds on what God’s Spirit can provide, then the solutions are infinite, since the Spirit is infinite. There are no limitations present the the Lord gets involved. Time and space are His creation and He can do what He wants to do with them. He wrote the laws of physics and He can set them aside if He desires.

So we are encouraged to set our minds on what God’s Spirit desires. He wants what is eternally best for us, and those things that are in line with His design. He knows the best way to navigate this world, and He wants to pilot us through.

The recent shipwreck in the Suiz Canal that stopped shipping traffic for a week costing hundreds of millions of dollars in additional shipping costs and delays shows the importance of a good pilot. But even the best human pilot can get off course, make bad decisions, be derelict in their duties.

But it is not enough to set our minds in the right place. We must also allow ourselves to be governed by the LORD. He must be the One calling the shots, giving the directions. We must let Him steer us. He must be in charge.

We set our minds in the right direction and then allow Him to direct. We repent, stop going in the wrong direction and turn around, and then we allow Him to make the course corrections as needed. We tune in to His frequency and then listen to the direction He gives.
