Gravity – Matthew 19:4

Matthew 19:4 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,”

There are some things that are true regardless of place, time or people. Gravity is one such truth. If you are standing on the surface of our planet, gravity has proven itself active. No one escapes gravity’s pull.

Now I know that what I just said is a controversial statement for some. I am aware that even gravity itself is hard to explain for scientists, that there is debate about the exact nature of gravity and its pull. But this does not change the fact that things are pulled toward the center of the earth.

Some things are just true and can be stated as such. But in our world of political correctness and shaming, it can bring painful results to those who willingly state facts. In our day and age everything is up for interpretation, personal definitions, and the ‘right’ to have those personal definitions be embraced by all.

So we come to our text where Jesus is defending marriage as being between one man and one woman for life. The religious leaders have questioned Him in order to try and find a way to shut Him up. They want to trip Him up in what He says.

But Jesus doesn’t back down from the Truth. He states it very clearly. But He doesn’t stop there. He puts the blame for their ambiguity right back into their laps. They have stubborn hearts that cause them to create ways to wiggle out of God’s clear commands and design.

Jesus doesn’t come up with the definition of marriage on His own. He quotes from our founding documents, the book of Genesis. It is amazing how much clarity about life and purpose and relationships can get clarified by looking at the first few chapters of the Scriptures. I have been surprised by how many times the Truth revealed in these few chapters get quoted and referred to in the rest of Scripture.

We must be willing to stand on solid ground no matter the force brought against us. Solid ground is the best place to stand, even in this day and age. We don’t have to present the Truth in an offensive way, but we should expect that the Truth will offend some people. That is the nature of truth.

Some might argue about the nature of gravity and say that it doesn’t affect them, that they are exempt from its pull. Just have them stand under a suspended piano with a knife to the rope and see if their conviction still holds firm.

But not every Truth is of equal importance. You might let the gravity discussion go. Maybe their are other Truths that are more fundamental to our mission. The Gospel doesn’t stand or fall on our theory of gravity. Major on the majors, minor on the minors.
