In a culture that didn’t have modern sanitation, washing your feet when entering a house was common. It was usually done by the person with the lowest position in the household, often a servant or small child. Jesus assumes that position. He takes on that humble role to teach His disciples, and us, an important lesson. Being a servant to others shows that we understand our place in God’s kingdom. Picking up the small tasks and doing them with joy, that is what the Gospel looks like in everyday life.
Jesus says there is a vital connection between Himself and the Father. When we accept Him, we accept the Father. When we embrace the Truth about Jesus, we embrace the Truth about God. Judas could not or would not accept Jesus for who He was. He was not fitting the mold he had in his mind for what Messiah would be doing and saying, so he left in order to try to force Jesus into acting like his vision of the Messiah. Have you ever tried to force God to do something? Has it worked?
Love is Jesus’ way of doing things. His love drove Him to the Cross and love is to be the defining characteristic of our lives as well. We are to love the Lord and love each other. Can people see and experience that love flowing from our lives?
