Day 8

Grace for adulteress defended

Key Verses: 7, 12, 32, 36, 44, 59

This chapter begins with one of the few questioned passages in the Scriptures. We are not sure the first eleven verses were written here by John. This story seems to be in character like something Jesus might have done, but we are not sure. But let’s take a look and see what we can learn from this chapter.

My first question is where is the man? They brought the woman, but where is the man? The Old Testament demanded that both be brought; both were guilty of the same offense. So, where is he? Something is not right, and Jesus knows it. Jesus puts them on the spot by pushing for forgiveness by emphasizing our collective sin and individual responsibility. Who knows what He wrote in the dirt, but everyone left without continuing their attack. Jesus offers forgiveness coupled with repentance. She accepts.

John next turns focus to Jesus next “I AM” statements. The last on in chapter six was I am the Bread of Life. Now He says He is the Light of the World. If we follow Him we will never live in darkness. This does not mean that we will have a flashlight over our heads at night in our walks to the bathroom, but that we will always have His presence with us. We will know where we came from and where we are going, just like Him. Jesus came from the Father, and to the Father He will return. We were sinners and we now have a heavenly destination, because we believe in Him.

When we know Him, we know the Truth, and we will be set free. No fear of death. No question of our eternal future and His presence as we walk through this life. What more could we need? If Jesus makes us free, we are free! In contrast, the devil only spews lies, and those who follow Him will never be free.

The religious leaders know exactly what Jesus is saying. He is claiming to be God, and so they pick up stones to execute Him, in line with Old Testament commands about blasphemy. You can’t claim to be God and get away with it. Very different from our day, isn’t it. You can claim almost anything and get away with it. Jesus claims are backed up with His words and actions. How about your claims?
