I would like to give you one way to keep the phrases fresh in your mind. Here we go with the first four chapters of John.
Chapter Phrase Index letter
Chapter 1 Jesus is the Word A
Chapter 2 Outstanding miracle at Cana B
Chapter 3 Heavenly birth taught Nicodemus C
Chapter 4 Need of Samaritan woman D
Let’s take a look at these phrases. You will learn one phrase each day for the first four days of the month. The first day you concentrate on “A”. The second “B”, but review “A” as well. By the time you get to day four, you do some mental manipulation in order to be sure you know the phrases. It might go something like this (I will simply put the index letter to represent the phrase): A B C D, D C B A, A B C D, D C B A, A C B D. The more you can roll the phrases around in your brain, the more they become part of your mind.
One other element is also helpful. I like to attach the chapter number to phrase, so it would go something like: 1A 2B 3C 4D… or “1 Jesus is the Word, 2 Outstanding miracle at Cana, 3 heavenly birth taught Nicodemus, 4 Need of Samaritan woman. “
Forward, backward, every other, every third, friendly quiz partner, index card shuffle, repeating out loud, writing it down, draw a picture, write a song. The more you can manipulate the phrases in connection to the Acrostic, the better you will be able to remember. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
So let’s start the adventure of Mastering the New Testament.
