10b Who then is able to stand against me? 11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
Sometimes arguing with the LORD is almost funny. Here the LORD has compared a fight against Him with a fight against an animal, possibly a crocodile. Before the invention of guns, capturing and killing was almost impossible. There is no way to subdue one and make it a pet. We can’t bring them under our control; they are too wild. We can’t make the LORD our pet either. We can’t make Him obey our desires. That would be just a futile as crocodile wrestling. He is too powerful. He is able to exercise His will, no matter what we do. We can’t make Him do what we want. I get a funny picture in my head of me sitting on the back of the LORD and trying to make Him do what I want. Then He turns and looks at me with an ‘Are you kidding me?’ look, and I stop trying. It would be like my three year old grandson riding on my back and ‘making me’ do what he wants. I bend my will to his; he does no bending. Some people think they are changing God’s will when they pray. I think we are simply conforming our will to His will. He uses our prayers; they are meaningful and necessary. But we can’t twist His arm and make Him do anything, anymore than we can make a crocodile treat our small children with respect. He is in charge.
