Today’s Reading Job 36:1-15

I am always a little wary when someone comes to me telling me they are speaking for God. Isn’t God able to speak for Himself? If He wants to communicate, doesn’t He have that ability? Aren’t the Scriptures enough? Hasn’t He revealed Himself fully in Christ? What more does He need to say? God is big enough to defend Himself. He doesn’t need us to stick up for Him. He can win whatever battle in which He wants to be involved. He lacks no strength or capacity. I am wary of someone who comes and tries to bring something new, fresh, missing, or novel, even if they say it comes from Scripture. “If it is new, it isn’t true.” I don’t need something new, I just need to put into practice what I already know. I need to be obedient to the Truth I have already learned. Elihu seems to have a chip on his shoulder, a chip with Job’s name on it. He is out for blood. This is not compassion, or even caring at work. This is just plain meanness. It almost sounds as if Elihu has a personal vendetta against Job. He missed the Sunday School lesson that says we should weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. He has them backwards. I’m not a ‘celebrity’ person. I don’t really like going to concerts or big conferences. I don’t collect autographs or photos with big smiles. If a pastor or church pushes themselves too much, I don’t attend. I want Jesus. I want the simple Good News. I want the hard Truth delivered in a way I can grasp it in a community of people who care about each other and the world. Elihu does not seem to fit that bill.
