26Side by side they lie in the dust, and worms cover them.
There is a universal principle that this verse emphasizes: 100% of people die. The four verses that precede this verse tell the common experience of mankind. Some people have no problems in life, while some seem to have them all. And they all end up in the grave. And for us, this doesn’t make sense. Since we can only look at the outward and at the temporal, we don’t have enough perspective to know that justice does happen. We think this is unfair, that God Himself is unfair. Job has sought comfort from his friends, understanding and compassion. Instead, he feels isolated and alone. It feels as if God Himself has abandoned and forgotten him. In order to be successful Jesus-followers we must learn to walk in other people’s shoes. We must learn to see life through their eyes, and their sufferings as if they were our suffering. I have a friend whose wife is struggling with cancer. She recently found out she has an unexplained lump. My heart sunk when I heard the news. Even as I type my heart is breaking for them. Such devastation! They feel so alone. He can’t share with people at work because those at work don’t seem to understand. They just don’t get it. God has given me the grace to connect with people in their deep pain and aloneness. I pray that He will give that grace to you as well. Are you willing to be broken so that you can learn to connect with other people’s pain? Are you willing to let the Lord give you this grace?
