13Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones.
The LORD calls creation as a choir to testify about His greatness, his comfort and compassion for His people. Today we are bombarded with news conferences announcing a multitude of solutions to our problems, and we all just wag our heads and say, “Not another waste of our time.” And yet, the LORD calls all of creation to tell His story. I listened to John Piper’s book “Don’t Waste Your Life” last week. One of the illustrations has stuck in my spirit. It deals with magnifying the Lord. When we magnify the Lord, it is not that we take a magnifying glass and look at a very small Lord and make Him appear larger than He is, but rather we take a telescope and make the enormity of who He is evident to our eyes, like a distant galaxy now seen in its billions of stars. The Lord is so magnificent that it takes all of creation to sing the song of that greatness. It would not be enough to get the choir from the little country church to sing His praise, though that works as well, but all the choirs of every church in every age singing in unison with creation providing the orchestration. The distant stars whose light began it journey millions of years ago arrive with perfect timing from all those various points in space at just the right moments to create the perfect symphony of praise to Him. So where are we in this symphony? Are we joining our lives with the rest of creation in declaring His greatness?
