13Sept 2011 Isaiah 36:17

17until I come and take you to a land like your own–a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

There is always a “until” when you make a deal with your enemy. The king of Assyria has invaded the land of Israel and captured all the cities except Jerusalem. Now his commander has come to try to get them to surrender without a fight. He talks directly to the people over the objections of King Hezekiah’s representatives, who have gone to hear the terms of surrender. The enemy has offered to allow the people to enjoy their own homes and produce for a season, and then the word “until” enters the narrative. They can stay “until” they are deported. How kind of them! After the “until” they are captives, serving in a foreign land, away from all their comforts and subjected to the rule of another. Our enemy, Satan, uses this “until” many times in his dealings with humanity. He offers us pleasures for a season. Sin seems to be OK for a time, and then the “until” comes due. An affair seems good for the moment, but the “until” comes, and the wreckage of a divorce comes piling into your life. Drinking has its pleasures, relieving stress and taking the edge off “until” you get behind the wheel or raise your hand in anger. The extra portion of dessert is wonderful “until” you try on those clothes. Every sin has an “until” waiting. Don’t be deceived. Payment will be required. For Jerusalem the day of judgment would come, but not at this time. God postponed Jerusalem’s day, but delay is not guaranteed. Sometimes the “until” happens immediately. What “until” are you waiting for in your life? What sin are you hoping to avoid the consequences of right now? Maybe it is time to flee from it, and find the rest you seek.
