14and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the LORD filled the temple of God.
In church circles we often talk about wanting to see the glory of the LORD fall on a service. But do we really know what we are asking? If the Lord showed up, would be happy with the result? This passage talks about the moment when Solomon had finished building the Temple in Jerusalem and the Lord shows up. Everything that was happening came to a standstill. They had planned music and sacrifice, but all that had to stop. When God really shows up, everything comes to a full stop. No more singing or preaching. No testimonies or responsive readings. When the Lord shows up, we end up on our faces before Him. Being in God’s presence is a scary thing. Clouds and fire surround Him. But this is not the only time the Lord shows up. When Jesus walked among us the holiness of the Lord was manifested in flesh. We got to see holiness in action. We have Exhibit A in the Holy Living expo. Holiness clothed in compassion and justice. So next time we want the Lord to show up, be ready for a changed life and a holy fear. Yes, our sins are forgiven in Christ and we have no fear of judgment, but being in the presence of pure holiness clothed in power can still be frightening. And if we aren’t frightened, perhaps the Lord really hasn’t shown up.
