12July 2011 1 Chronicles 29:14

14“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.”

Sometimes we get a funny understanding of our possessions. We often them as being permanent and we become very attached to them. Or we might think that we acquired them without anyone else’s help. They become “OUR” possessions. But our possessions and our wealth are very temporary. They can fade away in an instant. A government can change and the old currency becomes worthless overnight. A hurricane or tornado comes through and all we have worked for is wiped out in a few hours. King David is establishing his son as the next king and working hard to make sure he is successful in his new role. In the process he is getting everything ready for the building the Temple after he dies. He gives a great deal of his wealth to the Temple treasuries. In the process he states a great truth: everything comes from God and when we give to the Lord we are only giving what He has given us. We are not the originators of wealth. If we have wealth, someone else gave it to us. Maybe we had a great idea and sold it for a profit. Someone else paid the price for your idea. No matter how you look at it, your wealth came from someone else: your employer, your family, the insurance company, your investors, or even from the ground. David is willing to tell the whole world that his wealth came from the Lord. Where did your wealth come from?
