11July 2011 1 Chronicles 26:6

6His son Shemaiah also had sons, who were leaders in their family’s family because they were very capable men.

Being capable is a qualification for being a leader. We do not want leaders in any realm in our lives to lack the ability to lead. And we want to be able to see their track record of leading to see if it is more than talk. Great leaders are leaders who have the strength to do the work. This is one of the keys to being a leader. We must be able to have the strength to follow through, to stay the course. We see many political leaders, for example, who talk the talk, but aren’t willing or able to follow through. They start, but when the poll numbers change, they change. But it is not just politicians who do this. We must be willing to hear from God and then follow through with what we hear. We must have the strength to stick with it even when it gets tough. Leading is difficult. Leading can be lonely. Leading requires that we have the ability to do the job. Jesus talked about being faithful with a few and then being given more responsibility. If we can’t be faithful in our present responsibilities, what reason could we give for being given more responsibilities? We need to demonstrate that we are capable of handling leadership. How are you doing with your leadership responsibilities?
