1I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? 2My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
If only this was our prayer today! The LORD wants to be our protector. Are we willing to let Him be? This does not mean that nothing bad will happen to us, ever. We live in a fallen world where bad things happen, to good people and even to bad people. People get terrible illnesses and suffer. Young children get run over by cars and killed. Spouses get blown to bits in faraway places. Even the most faith-filled person will die of something. So what does having the LORD as our helper accomplish if He doesn’t rescue us from the inevitable harms that come as a result of living in a fallen world? This is a hard question, one that becomes a stumbling block for some during these crisis moments. Part of how I understand this comes from a change in perspective. Our lives here on this earth are but a short blip in eternity’s timeframe. If our life during this blip has suffering, how long will this suffering last? A blip! This does not minimize the suffering, but perhaps raise our eyes to recognize that there is an eternity of non-suffering waiting for those who are faithful to the LORD. Even more than that, an eternity of joyful bliss in God’s presence. But there is a catch. This bliss is for those who look to the LORD for their help. This must be an active, living process during this blip of a life. Just believing is something is not enough, no matter how hard you believe it. You must trust the LORD, maker of heaven and earth. Anyone or anything less than this will not bring an eternity of bliss.
