29However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nabat, which he had cause Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.

Selective obedience is still disobedience. Jehu has just destroyed Baal worship in Israel, a good thing. The temple to Baal was turned into a toilet! But he did not clean the land of golden calf worship. He did a good thing in reference to Baal, but a bad thing in connection to the gold calves. Are we capable of obedience and disobedience at the same time? You bet we are! We can be doing the right thing in one area of our lives and the wrong thing in another. We can be blind to this double standard, or we can be doing the old bait and switch. That is where we clean up one area in hopes that the other area won’t be discovered. We will often shift focus by pointing out our cleaned up sin in others. “We aren’t doing ____ like they are!” What would please the Lord would be if we were obedient to that still small voice. If we clean up what He is leading us to clean up when He is leading us, then His power is present to do the work. Let’s do less finger pointing and more repentance. Let’s take the log out of our eye before we worry about the speck in someone else’s.
