12After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

Wind, earthquake, fire or a whisper. Which one sounds to you like the sound of the Creator of the Universe? We would naturally expect Him to show up with loud sounds. If I were someone important, I would hire a PR firm to make a real show of it. I would get flags and music, lights and a large stage with Jumbotrons. I would have those spotlights twirling in the night sky announcing that I had arrived. But that is because I really am a ‘nobody.’ I would need all those things to bolster my reputation. The LORD doesn’t need anything to bolster His reputation. When He shows up for Elijah when he is in the middle of depression, the LORD shows up in the whisper. A whisper is a voice of closeness and intimacy. Families whisper to each other. Dating couples whisper. Parents whisper with their children and children whisper with each other. Elijah needed to know that the LORD was still with him, even when he feels like he needs to run for his life. We can have that “whisper” experience as well. We can be intimate with the LORD, waiting in closeness and quietness before Him, waiting for the whisper. As we read the Word and take time to let it sink in, we can hear His whisper. When was the last time you heard Him whisper? Isn’t it time you stopped running and became still?
