26May 2011 Galatians 3:23-25

23 Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. 24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian.

I sometimes hear Jesus-followers talking about the Ten Commandments as something they want to keep, or maybe even as something we should keep. But this shows a lack of knowledge about the purpose the Law was given in the first place. The Law was never meant as a means to get to know the Lord. Its role was always a temporary one. Once Jesus came, the Law no longer has a role in the life of a Jesus-follower. It has finished its purpose. The purpose of the Law was to bring us to Jesus, plain and simple. Once we come to Jesus, we don’t need the Law any longer. We don’t need to be kept, since we are now in Christ. The verse above use the picture of a guardian, of a mature adult whose job it was to protect a child and get them from one place to another. Once a child has become mature, the guardian no longer has a job; they become superfluous. Once you are in college, you don’t need a school bus driver to bring you home each day. Their job in your life is complete. Once you become a Jesus-follower, you don’t need the Law to draw you to God. The Law made you feel helpless and humble, since there was no way anyone could keep it in its entirety. Then, when you were in this state of broken desire, the Lord provided forgiveness and restoration. But now, the Spirit writes on our hearts when we stray. He calls us back to Himself.
