13May 2011 1Samuel 31:6

6So Saul and his three sons and his armor-bearer and all his men died together that same day.

This was not a good day! Anytime you have all the leadership of a nation die in the same day, it is not a good day. When there is a vacuum of leadership, you never know who or what will fill the space. Sometimes when tragedy strikes some people rise to the occasion, finding strength and courage that they did not previously possess. These new leaders seem to come from nowhere. But if we looked more closely we would see that they were already being groomed and trained for leadership, although they might not have had the opportunity to fully exercise those skills. Part of being a good leader is training those behind you. I think the real measure of a person is the trail of trained and ready leaders that they leave when they depart. Who are you training? It won’t happen without some deliberate effort on your part. There are people watching you and choosing to either emulate your leadership and life or reject it. I am sure I have had some in each category. I know I have had some leaders from whom I have gleaned both positive and negative lessons. The ones I admired the most were those who allowed me to grow and even overtake them in ministry. They were not afraid of my success. That is a good leader.
