9May 2011 1Samuel 20:4

4Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you want me to do, I’ll do for you.”

Jonathan is the next in line for the throne as king. His father, Saul, most certainly wants his son to succeed him. But the Lord has made David king instead. Jonathan and David have a very close friendship. Jonathan is OK with David becoming king after his father. But Saul has tremendous jealousy of David’s success. Jonathan knows his father’s hatred of David and wants to defend his best friend, even when it means opposing his father’s wishes. Sometimes doing the right thing is extremely difficult. Sometimes it means choosing between different loyalties. In Jonathan’s case, it was between family and friend. He chose friend over family. Not many of us will have to make these kinds of choices. Or will we? Sometimes the Gospel requires us to leave behind family in order to serve Him more completely. Are you willing to do “whatever” it takes to serve Him?
