19When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way.” This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.
How many of us think that since we have accepted Christ that we can go our own way? I hope we don’t, but I am afraid some do. I see it in their actions. Our words and our actions need to match. That does not mean that we “dumb down” our words, but that we “raise the bar” on our actions. Our actions should be in the process of transformation, just as our minds are in that process. We are to be in the Word, allowing it to renew us. Our actions must match our profession of faith. This verse says that disaster will follow this kind of duplicity. If we claim to love the Lord, then we ought to be loving toward others. We ought to be in His Word. We ought to be praying. We ought to be closely connected to other Believers in a church fellowship. We shouldn’t be hopping from church to church. We shouldn’t allow our devotional life to be like a great amusement park ride, always going up and down with the thrills.
