6Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises.
I wonder what we are supposed to do? This Psalm is one of jubilation, unhindered excitement and energy. These people are filled to overflowing with praise. They are not sitting quietly, or even standing quietly. They are letting the joy of the moment escape through their mouths and bodies. I often wonder how people can be in a worship service where people are singing songs of praise to God and not sing themselves. I have noticed this trend in recent years in many of the churches that specialize in reaching the youngest generation. There is often what seems to be a ‘spectator’ mentality. The congregation comes and watches the band singing, almost like attending a concert instead of a time devoted to corporately entering into the presence of our Savior. They file in for a few minutes, and then file out, seemingly unchanged and unaffected by the experience. An outside observer might conclude that they simply watched what was happening, but never participated. What a shame to have had the opportunity to let the joy that is on the inside get expressed on the outside. Maybe that’s where the problem lies, there is no joy on the inside!
