11 “‘Anyone the man with a discharge touches without rinsing his hands with water must wash their clothes and bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening.
Now is not the time to get discouraged with reading. Keep up the pace. You are halfway through Leviticus. Long before the age of disinfectants and the knowledge of microbes, the Lord introduces some very basic hygiene rules, like hand washing. This is common sense to us. But back then, almost 4000 years ago, this was revolutionary. But the marvelous thing is the hygienic benefit is only a side issue. The hand washing is primarily a physical symbol of a greater theological concept. The concept of holiness gets illustrated in so many of the rituals found in Leviticus and established as part of being identified as an Israelite, one of God’s chosen. The physical washing did not make them holy. They were already holy because God had delivered them out of Egypt. The physical washing was a way to demonstrate to the Lord and to each other that they recognized they were the Lord’s and consequently holy. These rituals were reminders of their relationship to the Lord. These rituals became part of so many aspects of their lives. Like reading and studying the Scriptures can be a habit, a ritual that demonstrates we belong. So keep reading. Keep expecting the Lord to show you things about Himself and about you. He is getting ready to move. Be ready.
