7 The priest shall then put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense that is before the LORD in the tent of meeting. The rest of the bull’s blood he shall pour out at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
As you read these chapters notice how many animals get killed and all the blood that gets poured at the base of the altar. It is an incredibly messy business, this worship preparation. So why don’t we do these sacrifices anymore? We have sin that needs to be forgiven. The answer is easy: Jesus. All these sacrifices pointed forward to Jesus on the cross. They were all types and shadows of the reality in Christ. These sacrifices didn’t actually bring forgiveness. In the days before paper money people would exchange pieces of paper with IOU’s on them. Those pieces of paper didn’t actually pay the bill. They only represented the future payment that would come, especially when the harvest happened. These sacrifices only represented the future death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. They pointed forward to the fulfillment we have in Jesus. So as you read these chapters in Leviticus, remember that they all point to Jesus’ completed work.
