1The two angels arrived at Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city. When he saw them, he got up to meet them and bowed down with his face to the ground.
Did Lot always sit at the gateway of the city and provide lodging to late arriving visitors? Did he know of the character of his city and give safe haven to visitors? I often wonder about Lot, how he could live in such a wicked city and yet be called righteous. Maybe this was one of the things he did that was an outgrowth of his righteousness. He knew the strangers would not be safe staying out in the open during the night, so he insists that they come and stay with him. And he was right. Are there parts of our culture, cities of deviancy that we should avoid? What if we live in one of those pockets of sin? What should our actions be while we are there? How can we provide protection for others? Is our home a place safe from those hazards? Or are we becoming partakers in that sin, like Lot’s daughters, who, out of fear, began to act like the culture in which they were raised?
