2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods.
Sometimes we forget that Abraham worshipped other gods before the Lord intervened in his life. He was not always a faithful follower of the Lord. There came a moment in his life where he had to make the choice to follow, to obey the voice that spoke to him. His life was never the same after that point. He had no way of knowing what would happen, and where the road ahead would lead him. He simply obeyed, and the rest is history. Joshua is getting ready to die. He is reminding the Israelites, especially the leaders, about the path that brought them from “beyond the river” to inhabit the land of promise. We must likewise remember the path that brought us to where we are now. We need to look back and see from where we came, to where we presently reside. The longer I serve the Lord, the more amazed I am at the journey. I could never have predicted that I would be a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with the privilege of walking with soldiers and their families, of sharing their tears and joys. I would never have painted this future for myself. I am glad that I let the Lord have the brush and that I allowed Him to do the painting.
