4 Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Sometimes we think that our modern times have invented some new areas of temptation, some new areas of sin. Perhaps, but most of us get caught up in some very old fashioned sins. People have been defiling their marriages for thousands of years. This is nothing new. They have chosen to have sex with other people while they are married and have chosen to have sex before marriage. This passage, and many others, says that God will judge. The only way to stay pure is to wait until marriage and then only have sex with your spouse. It is so simple, and yet for many, so difficult to achieve. But that is part of what honoring marriage is all about. We take the vows to “love, honor, and cherish” and begin the journey together. Right now we are facing a grave crisis. The sexual boundaries have been smashed. Premarital sexual encounters are the norm. But with each sexual encounter the connection, both biologically and emotionally, gets weaker. Sex is often treated like a kiss, something that gets exchanged between two friends. The sacredness has been lost. We have been reduced to animals, unable to harness the power of their urges. We can start today, right now in this moment to purify our marriage bed. We can confess our transgressions to the Lord and begin anew. We can focus our hearts, minds and desires on our spouse, instead of allowing the wandering that has permeated our past. We can honor marriage even if we are single.
