16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son
We read about Esau and wonder how he could be so shortsighted. He is hungry and gives up all his inheritance rights for a meal. And yet people do this every day when they chose sin over obedience. Some rash decisions might not give away your inheritance, but some will end a marriage, and there are many who do that. And yet people know what they are doing might end their marriage when it is discovered, and yet they do it anyway. The hidden conversations stored on a cell phone. Maybe even pictures! Yikes!!!! Habits formed that help wipe the slate clean after the encounter. And impulsive actions can have long lasting effects. The Arab people trace their lineage back to Esau. How the world would be different today if Esau had not been so impulsive. There certainly would have been much less bloodshed. But remember that Isaac, the younger brother, was not innocent in this act. He was deceitful and manipulative. He knew what he was doing was for his benefit alone, and yet he selfishly did it anyway. And the Israelites come from Isaac. You see we are all in the same boat. We all “use the system” to get what we want and need. We fudge a little. The “white lies” we tell. So let’s not fool ourselves. We have often sold our birthright at God’s children, settling for a leftover rather than feasting at the Father’s table. Today, as you go about your day, notice those times when you reach a convenient distance, rather than giving it your full effort. Those are all instances of selling out. God wants and has what is best for us. Are you willing to step up and reach for all that God has in store for you?
