13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”
The woman spoken of in this verse wasted expensive perfume on Jesus, at least that was the perspective of at least one of the disciples. She poured it on Jesus. Jesus said it was to prepare Him for burial. Jesus said it was an honorable thing that she did. What I find interesting is that the next section in Matthew’s Gospel tells the account of Judas’ negotiations with the religious leaders to hand Jesus over to them to be killed. The woman is willing to give up a huge sum of money for Jesus. Judas is willing to betray the Savior for a few silver coins. Are you expending everything for Jesus or betraying Jesus for a pittance? We can see from this contrast the attitude these two people had toward money. To the woman, money was just a tool to serve her Savior. To Judas, money was something to be gained at whatever cost. And Jesus is the focal point for both. How are you handling your finances? Is Jesus the focal point?
