7Nov 2010 Heb 5:13

13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
One of the principles about life is the principle of growth. When a child does not meet the standard growth expected for their age, doctors and parents are concerned. Tests are performed, diagnosis given, and corrective interventions carried out. I remember being underweight when I was in elementary school. I remember the Doctor telling my mom to feed me whatever I wanted at every meal in order to get me to gain weight. When we don’t grow we know something is wrong. The same is true in the spiritual realm. The writer to the Hebrews uses this principle to push the readers into growth. He wants to challenge them out of their complacent posture. He calls them spiritual babies who still drink milk. Would you want to only drink milk after experiencing the many types of delicious adult food? Of course you wouldn’t. Once you have experienced solid Biblical teaching you never want to go back to milk. You want a full and rich diet of the Word. You want to be challenged to go further in you spiritual walk. You recognize it when you are standing on a firm foundation of truth rather than just hanging on the edges hoping to maintain your grip. We must grow in our spiritual walk. Part of the growth is our discipline and knowledge of the Word. As we get ready to enter a new year, I want to challenge you now to think about ramping up your personal involvement with the Word. I want to push you to stop drinking only milk and take out a knife and fork and develop a diet of solid food. Push yourself to grow.
