27Oct 2010 Heb 2:1

1We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
There is a possibility of drifting away from the Lord. We can also drift away from our spouses over time. In each case we start the relationship with a promise to stay faithful, no matter what happens. And in both cases choices we make can affect the relationship, causing us to drift apart. It takes effort to continue to grow closer over time. It is easy to get comfortable in a relationship, and end up neglecting it. The Lord warns us that we must pay attention to our relationships, with Him and with others. The most important relationship we need to attend to is our relationship with Him. If that relationship fails, our eternity is at stake. Drifting is a slow process. It happens inch by inch, not mile by mile. I remember when I was a kid being in a boat and drifting. I would take the canoe out on the lake and find a little back-water and just sit, letting the gentle current move me. Sometimes I would drift into the trees and shallow growth at the water’s edge. The branches would make a gentle scraping noise to alert me to their presence. Sometime I would drift out into more open water, silently moving, almost imperceptibly. This same action can happen in our Christian walk. If we don’t continue to aim at the Lord, we can drift off course. Sometimes we run aground and sometimes it seems as though there was no harm done. But drifting can get cause us to lose our way. I want to encourage you today. If you are doing some drifting in your walk with Jesus, come home again. Spend some time in prayer and in the Word. He is waiting for your safe return.
