16 They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.
To claim something is not enough. We must live it. Our claims and our life need to match. If we say that Jesus is the answer to life’s problems, but when problems come into our lives we run somewhere else for the answers, we are in error. We are living inconsistent lives. We need our lives and our actions to match. We need consistency. If we are not moving toward the Lord, we are moving away from Him. There is no neutral in the Christian walk. Does your life line up with what you claim to believe? Some good news does exist! Even Paul had problems having his life line up with his beliefs. I think the point to remember is that we need to be growing, not wilting. Paul’s advice to Titus regarding these false prophets was that their life didn’t match their message. He is pretty harsh with his words, harsh and truthful. If our lives don’t match, we are unfit for doing anything good. We can’t claim to know Christ and go out partying at the clubs. That is inconsistent with the message of Christ. We can’t be borrowing from tomorrow constantly and be a good steward of our finances. If we have too much debt, we are living beyond our means. We need to get our life in line with our belief. If we are eating our way to comfort, we need to get our comfort from the Lord. Our actions need to affirm who Jesus is, His completeness and sufficiency. He is enough, and our actions need to reflect that reality.
