16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
God wants us to be thoroughly equipped for every circumstance in life. He does that through His Word. The main problem with Believers today is their lack of knowledge of the Word. Recent polls have shown the appalling lack of basic knowledge of the Scriptures. The Lord wants us to be completely ready to accomplish His tasks in this world. He gives us everything we need, but we must appropriate it for ourselves. We must read and study the Word. When we do this, we will be thoroughly equipped. Someone might say, “I am not called to be a teacher, so these things don’t apply to me.” We might not be called to the position of a teacher in the Church, but we do all teach others. If we are parents, we are teaching! If there are younger people around us, we are teaching. We even teach our peers. The Scriptures will accomplish these tasks if we let it. The Word will teach, rebuke, correct, and train. The Word will teach us, if we will read and study it. That is because the Scriptures are not dead words. They are words breathed by God. His breath of life is still in them. When we read, He makes them come alive and do His work in us. This is not something we do, but something He does. When we allow the Word to infiltrate our minds and spirits God does His work in us. One of the worst feelings in the world is when we find ourselves in a situation without the appropriate means to make it through with our spirits intact. When we are driving on empty in the middle of nowhere we suddenly realize we should have stopped at that last gas station. The Word will fill up our spiritual tank, but we must take time to fill up.
