7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly.
Being godly is hard work! It does not come naturally. It goes against our grain. There is no pill we can take, no five step program we can engage in. It takes day by day, moment by moment yielding and obeying. It takes the grace of God working into every fiber of our being, pushing sin and rebellion aside. It takes focus and dedication. We can’t idol our days away playing Farmville! We can’t just forward the latest email to all our friends. Youtube can’t be our best friend. We can’t pick up every fad of a religious nature and run with it. The shelves of Christian bookstores are filled with books that offer you stories of those who have been successful in their Christian walk. Or at least those are the ones being written. There is no substitute for God’s letter to us, the Bible. We can read about someone’s journey to heaven or hell, their tips for powerful prayer, their journey to deeper depths or higher heights. But too often those books just sidetrack us on our journey. There is no substitute for God’s Word. We need to read it and let it soak into every corner of our being. If we aren’t spending enough time in the Word, we will fill our lives with what Paul calls godless myths and old wives’ tales. Instead of the Truth of God’s action in history, we get filled with man’s attempts at humanity. We have lost the art of silence. We have caught the “busy” bug. It is time for us to be in training with godliness being our goal.
