3 It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;
God’s will for our lives is that we be set apart for His use and glory. In that process of being set apart, called sanctification, our actions and our character reflect to an ever greater degree His actions and character. This is a lifelong process. When we become believers this process starts. The Spirit begins to whisper and guide us. He prompts us when we are at crossroads. He tells us which choice is pleasing to the Lord. Sometimes the choice is between two good things. Sometimes the choice is more subtle. Sometimes the choice is obvious. This verse and the ones that follow show one of those choices that is always unacceptable to the Lord. Sexual immorality is never acceptable. Sexual activity that is outside of the marriage bond and bed is always an evil. That includes pornography. All sexual activity, real or imagined, needs to be in the context of marriage. Husbands are to be delighting themselves in the wives of their youth. Our focus is to be on our spouse, not on some airbrushed object of exploitation. Our attention is to be on kindling and feeding a healthy desire for our spouse. We are to be fanning the flame of desire for our spouse, building a deep relationship that includes sexual touch. When that happens we are the most fulfilled we can be with an earthly relationship. That total giving of self to the other. This is what God has designed for us in marriage. Sexual activities outside of this type of marriage bed can never be truly fulfilling. They leave a person empty and wanting more. Feed the healthy desire and starve the unhealthy.
