14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.
I like someone who is straightforward in their speech. I don’t like fancy talkers. When someone can’t be straightforward in their speech, I get the feeling they are trying to pull something over on me or that they don’t know what they are talking about. Paul wants us to know the truth to such a degree that when someone comes bringing some false teaching, we will not be moved from the Truth. There are people out there who are just like used car salesmen with an alternative message. Their motives are not pure. They know they are leading you astray and that is exactly what they want to do. The Mormons and the Muslims, among many others, are deceived. They believe they have the truth, but the Truth is not with them. Most of them don’t realize they are pushing a lie from the pit of Hell. But if we know the Truth, then we won’t be swayed. The Truth is the person of Jesus. We must have an intimate knowledge of Him. When someone comes to us with a false teaching, we should be able to spot it, not because we can find the falsehood, but because our relationship with Jesus gets disturbed. The Holy Spirit will bear witness to His Truth when it is shared. There will be a resonance to Truth being taught. Often your gut will just let you know that something is amiss, something is out of whack. During Paul’s day there were many twists of the Truth beginning to arise. During our day there are many as well. One of the most popular is the notion that all religions are basically the same, all leading to the same truth. This makes no sense. How can there be only one true God and countless millions of gods all at the same time? How can there be one way through Jesus and as many different ways as there are people? Truth is always exclusive. If there is Truth, then there must be un-truth. The truth being proposed today is that there is no truth!
