1Aug2010 Matthew 19:12

12 For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.

Eunuchs could not participate in sexual relations. There are people who chose to remain single for the sake of the Gospel. They chose to remain sexually inactive. There is a great debate about individuals who are attracted to members of their own gender, or even feel that they are the opposite gender. Much of the debate is powered by the belief that life is fair, that everyone should be equal in every way. But life is not about equality. Equality does not exist. In Jesus day that inequality was recognized and accepted. The Gospel does not correct these inequalities here on earth. In God’s eyes we are of equal value, but that value does not manifest itself fully in this life. Eternity balances these things out. But even there, there will be differing rewards based on our life of faith, but that is another day’s lesson. I personally think that gay people can make the choice to remain celibate and live a life of purity before the Lord. I think those born with sexual birth defects fit in the first category Jesus mentioned, those born eunuchs. With the advent of modern medicine some of these defects can be surgically altered. For some it means a healthy sex life, but for others it is simply an outward cosmetic fix for social reasons, because the defect goes beyond the surface. So what does this have to do with me, you might ask. Not everyone has the “right” to what everyone else has. Sin has left its mark on the world, and one of those marks is inequality. We need to reach out to the single people in our communities. They get lonely and discouraged just like we do. Some of them have chosen singleness. Some are still desiring marriage. Marriage is not a right. Some don’t get it, even if they are not gay. Quadriplegics can’t be in the US Military. They don’t have the right to serve. Life is not fair.
