1The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.
I can tell you this as a fact: be careful when people want you to prove something. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day are rejecting Jesus’ ministry. They have started looking for ways to arrest and convict Him so that they can eliminate Him. They have not believed the signs, the miracles that He has already done. Some of them have been eye witnesses of those miracles. They don’t want a sign in order to believe, they want a sign in order to prove He violates some technicality of the Law. They won’t believe any proof that He did provide. They have already made up their minds to reject Him. And Jesus knows this! We must be equally wise. When someone asks you to prove something, stop and evaluate. What is their motive in asking? Will their beliefs change as a result of the proof? Or are they asking in order to put us on the defensive, to back us into a corner? I have found that people often want proof of the Gospel, 100% proof. But they daily live their lives with less than 100% proof. There is no proof that the car driving in the opposite lane is not going to veer into your lane, and yet you drive your car. Life is filled with uncertainties, “leaps of faith” that take us beyond proof. We don’t work on 100%. We work on enough proof. Is there enough evidence for me to move forward? Does this option make more sense than the others? Is there a reasonable chance that things will work out? So if you are struggling with wanting 100%, you have good company. But we almost never have 100% proof of anything. Have faith. Put your trust in the One who gave you the ability to question and search.
