56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

In Christ, both the price of sin and the demands of the Law have been fulfilled in His life, death and resurrection. That is the central message of the Gospel. Every requirement of God toward His people has been satisfied. We can now live lives freely serving Him without fear of rejection or falling short of His demands. Most of us grow up in homes without perfect acceptance and boundaries. We get punished without perfect justice. And of course we rebel. The Lord treats us as though we had always obeyed. That is because Jesus perfectly obeyed on our behalf. We get credit for His obedience. He took the sting of death. He removed the power of the law to condemn us, since He fulfill the law’s requirements. That is why we can live in victory. We can enjoy the life of obedience and all its benefits. We don’t have to worry about any sting or the law’s power over our life. We have victory! The problem is that, even though we have the victory, we act as though we did not. We act as though we had to worry about the sting, as though the law had power in our lives. Instead, we need to be looking forward rather than backward. Our focus needs to be on the victory we have rather than the sting we miss. If we have victory there is no need to always be looking to see if the sting is right around the corner.
