3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts—
The Lord calls Moses to build the Tabernacle, the place that will serve as the central point of worship for this new nation whom God rescued from Egyptian bondage. But what does Moses know about constructing furniture? He is a sheep-herder. So the Lord sends Bezalel to build all the furniture for him. Bezalel is skilled, very skilled. What I find encouraging is that when the Lord calls you to accomplish a task, you don’t necessarily have to have all the skills to do the job. Often times the Lord will send someone to work with you who possesses those skills that you lack. We have to be willing to recognize our deficit and accept the help of someone else. That can be a monumental task. In our society, we don’t want to admit our weaknesses. All too often someone will exploit our weaknesses to their advantage. When we are willing to face our weaknesses, then the Lord can send someone to fill our gaps. They will possess the skills we need. Their gifting will match our deficits. The whole will be greater than the sum of the parts. Notice that Bezalel is filled with the Spirit of God. His skill and ability is enhanced with God’s direct influence. He is the first person whom the Lord says was filled with the Spirit of God. It is a special thing when the Lord says you are filled with His Spirit. In some respects, Bezalel is more qualified than Moses. He certainly has the skills needed to make the Tabernacle and all its furnishings. When God calls us to a task, He will provide others who have the skills we lack. We need to be on the lookout for those others whom the Lord will send. We need to welcome their contribution and not be intimidated by their skills. Embrace their giftedness and watch the Lord do His work through human vessels.
