24 Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
Sometimes it just makes sense to do what someone else has suggested! Some people are so stubborn that if someone makes a suggestion, they feel like they have to reject it no matter how good the suggestion was. How foolish! Wisdom listens to the counsel of others. The source of the suggestion should not make any difference. If it is a good suggestion, use it. I have an acquaintance who needs to be in control, and this is not in the good sense. They are so afraid of failure that they must be in on every decision. And of course they are overwhelmed with the sheer number of decisions that need to be made. They often forget the details, because they feel they need to know all the details. And almost no one can keep all the details straight when they are trying to keep track of all the details in other people’s sphere of responsibility. Moses was wise. He realized that Jethro was correct. He could not keep doing what he was doing. He was getting overwhelmed. If you are overwhelmed you have two choices. Either you must put some things down (usually things others should be doing anyway) or you can keep pushing forward which results in burnout and bitter resentment. Eventually you will run out of umph and you will crash. Ask for help early. Take inventory of the things you are doing and figure out the things others should be doing and pass them along. Some things just need to be released. They are simply not important. They are not life and death. Often we pick up good projects and neglect the really important ones. The good projects are usually more fun and give us a quick payback in terms of feelings. The important projects are usually long term, slow payoff events. It can be hard to get excited about setting aside a little bit of money now for a vacation two years away.
