17Mar2009 Exodus 16:30

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

This simple statement sums up the Sabbath day. It is about rest. Sabbath means seventh. The Israelites don’t have to go and gather their food on the seventh day. On the sixth day the Lord provided enough to last for two days, and prevented it from rotting when it was kept overnight and eaten the next day. These three miracles all point to the same thing: God’s provision. The manna exists, doubles in proportion, and doesn’t rot, all point to God’s desire for His people to rest from their six-day activities. Every other day they gathered and prepared food. The seventh was to be different. They were to trust the Lord, to rest. Saturdays are different from me. I sleep in late, until about 6:30, if I don’t wake up earlier. I have my devotions and eat my breakfast. Then I try to do something fun with my wife. Every other day of the week I am occupied with my profession. But Saturdays are special to me. Sundays are filled with people and relationships, just like the rest of my week. But Saturdays are family. I want to encourage you to make some day a special day, different from the others, one day when you take time to demonstrate your trust in the Lord. You could carry on your income producing activities on that seventh day, but you chose not to work out of trust. There will be times when it is impossible to not do your income producing activities seven days a week. Soldiers experience this on a regular basis. But given the choice, everyone benefits from a day of different on a regular basis. Make it a day of different because you trust the Lord. Make it a day where you recognize the eternal investment you are making. Make it special.
