18 The LORD will reign for ever and ever.

Our God is eternal and unchanging. He has always been in charge and will always be in charge. As I write this I feel sorry for the Mormons who have a god who was like us, just human. They believe that the God of the Bible used to be a man and then became a god over this planet. Their hope is to be a god over a planet of their own. Their god changed. He was not always the one in charge. We serve a God who never changes. He has always and will always be God, unique in and outside the universe. After this life is over, we will see that the Lord reigns. When even this universe has spent its journey in history, the Lord will still reign. That is because He is not limited by the universe. He existed before and will exist after it. And His authority will never diminish. He will always be in charge. As the Israelites are delivered out of Egyptian bondage this was a hopeful message. Pharaoh’s authority and reign was large. The pyramids were built to demonstrate the extent of their reign. They believed their reign continued into the afterlife. Now the Lord has attacked the very core belief of the Egyptians. If Pharaoh and his army could not contain this crowd of untrained slaves, how could he possibly be as powerful as he claims? If his army is consumed by the waters of the sea, how could Pharaoh’s authority be that great? The core beliefs of the Egyptians were at stake, and Egypt’s gods failed them. That is because the Lord reigns for ever and ever. There is no territorial or temporal limit to His reign. No national or geographic boundary contains Him. No language or ethnic barrio stops Him from moving. He reigns!
