15Feb2009 Exodus 10:14

14 they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again.

This was a unique event. The words remind me of the words following the Flood. Never again would the whole earth be destroyed by flood. Never again would locusts so utterly destroy a land with such devastation. That is not to say that local floods won’t occur, or that there would not be smaller locust invasions. We are simply talking size and thoroughness. Nothing was left after this plague. All the green vegetation was eaten. If it grew it was eaten. If you have ever witnessed the effects of locusts it is easy to see how this could happen. They swarm like a fog and land, covering every surface, obscuring even a glimpse of the objects. They eat everything, moving systematically across the landscape like waves of the sea. There is an undulation to their movement. Up and down, left and right, all the while eating every plant. They can strip the bark off vines. They eat crops down to the ground. After they move through it looks as if a war has happened to the plant life. Stubble with no leaves on the trees. And the sound of hundreds of millions of them eating, jumping and flying is deafening. And if you are caught in the movement you get covered with them before they realize you are not a meal. And if you kill a few, or swat them away, there are thousands to take their place. All you can do is ride it out. I am glad that the Lord has put this plague on hold. We see locusts returning in the end times as outlined in the book of Revelation. But, even then, their destructive power is more limited than during this plague. They only kill a portion of the crops.
