2 God also said to Moses, “I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.
God is not a generic God. The true God has a name by which He makes Himself known. He is not “the man upstairs” or “the big guy.” He is not captured in our simplistic euphemistic expressions. He is not a non-personal force out there somewhere. He interacts with His creation. He talks to individuals. He chooses to reveal Himself to His people. He keeps His promises, even when His people seem to forget about the promises. His timing is very different than ours. He can take a few hundred years to work out His plan and that doesn’t bother Him. For us, if our internet connection is slow, we get impatient! God has chosen to reveal Himself slowly over time. The people had to be ready to receive the truth God wanted to reveal. It can take time for us to get ready to hear. Often other things get in the way of hearing. They can even be good things, but they get in the way none the less. We can even let religious things get in the way of our relationship with the Lord. We can get so busy that we miss out on the intimacy that the Lord wants to give each of us. God is more than just a God of big congregations. God wants to be known in our quiet places, in the dark spots in our souls. He does not back down from our inner secrets, but instead is waiting for us to plunge into the depths. In the depths we will find the Lord in new and marvelous ways we never imagined possible. There is always more of Him to be discovered by us than we have time. The more we discover the more realize there is to be discovered.
