18Jan2009 Exodus 4:11-12

11 The LORD said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

When God calls us to do something, He will qualify us to accomplish His purpose. Can you hear the gentle rebuke in that first verse? Moses has questioned the Lord’s calling him to accomplish this great task. He told that Lord that he was not much of a speaker, that he didn’t think he could get his words right. Have you ever felt inadequate in the way that you speak, especially when you had to talk to someone important? I have! Every time I preach I tremble. I am sharing God’s Word! Who am I to explain what God wants to say to His people? And yet, that is what God has called me to do. God calls each of us to accomplish more than we can by ourselves. The Lord is calling Moses to be a spokesperson. His rebuke, or words of encouragement depending on how you read them, give assurance that the Lord will empower Moses to accomplish the task. After all, the Lord is the One who made all our physical faculties. No matter what God is calling you to do, He is able to make up for your deficiencies. We must be willing to obey and allow the Lord to help us and teach us. Moses was going to be helped to speak and he was going to be helped in what to say. The Lord pulls the rug out from under Moses. All Moses’ excuses are now useless. Our excuses for lack of obedience are just as flimsy. Maybe today is the day we should begin being obedient.
