17Jan2009 Exodus 4:1

1Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, ‘The LORD did not appear to you’?”

Self-confidence is something that many people struggle with. Today we call it self-esteem. Even when you have great parents and come from a loving, caring home, you can end up with low self-confidence. Moses’ first experience with leadership did not turn out so well. The people rejected his leadership and he had to flee for his life. Now the Lord is telling him to step up to leadership again. The first time he tried, it was in his own strength. After that experience he realized he did not have what it takes to be a leader. And now the Lord is calling him to leadership on an even bigger scale. I can understand Moses’ hesitation. The people had not believed him the first time, what is different this time around? Have you ever let your previous failures get in the way of your future success? When the Lord is with us, success is as well. Part of life is realizing our inabilities and the power of God that overcomes those inabilities. Moses knows that the Lord has appeared to him, but he has no confidence in his ability to convey that truth in a way that the people will believe him. He is not trying to back out of the job God has called him to, but he is struggling to understand the mechanics of how it can be accomplished. He knows the people are skeptical because he is skeptical. He knows they will doubt because he doubts. He knows they will question because he questions. Moses is still focused on his resources. In many ways he still has not learned the power of the Lord. He is still stuck in little thinking. He still thinks he needs to have the resources to accomplish the task. He is going to come to grip with the resources of the Lord. Have you come to grips with the resources of the Lord or are you trying to do it on your own?
