12 And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
As the Lord speaks from the burning bush, the only other assurance He gives Moses is that after everything is completed, He will meet with all of them on this mountain. The Lord expects that this encounter with Moses will be enough to sustain him through this deliverance operation. The only sign He offers takes place after his obedience. After the people have been delivered they will all worship here on this mountain. I can hear Moses saying under his breath, “I’m going to need a little bit more than that if I am going to convince the Israelites to follow me.” “They might need something a bit more tangible.” Remember, at this point, Moses doesn’t even know God’s Name. “Well, you see, this bush was burning, but not burning. And this voice claimed to be God, and it spoke to me. His name? Well, I, I, I don’t know His name.” The Lord was calling Moses to some very difficult tasks. The Lord is calling Moses to faith. Not everything is going to be spelled out. All the details will not be clear. And yet, the Lord calls Moses to obedience. Too often we get stuck believing that we need more ‘proof’ of God’s existence, that we need 100% proof before we will trust. The real question is, “Do we have enough evidence to trust?” You trusted the engineer who made your computer, that he did not design it to electrocute you TODAY. You trust the other drivers on the road, that they won’t suddenly decide to play bumper cars. You trust the merchant who scans your credit card, even though some do steal credit card numbers. It is not about 100%, but about sufficient evidence. Moses now has sufficient evidence to take the next step. We have no video tape of Jesus’ life, but we do have sufficient evidence that He is God. Will you trust that evidence today and walk in obedience?
