11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” 12 And God said, “I will be with you.
Moses has begun a conversation with this voice coming from the bush that burns but is not consumed. The voice claims to be the God who was with his ancestors. The voice calls Moses to carry out a great work, the deliverance of a people from bondage. And Moses thinks it is about him. It is never about us. It is always about God. If we want to be used by the Lord, there is only one qualification. The only qualification that we need is the presence of God. When Moses looks at himself he knows he can’t do what the Lord has asked of him. He doesn’t have what it takes. But the Lord says, “I will be with you.” That is the qualification we need. If the Lord is with us we are like the little boy on the playground taking on the bully. We stand there speaking to the bully, challenging him, and all the while there is a six foot High School football player standing right behind us reinforcing every word with his eyes. It is not the little boy who makes the bully back down, but the High School football player. It is not Moses, but the Lord who will make Pharaoh back down. When we face troubles, the Lord will be with us in those troubles. We are not facing the challenges alone. When we are in obedience to the Lord, then we know that what we are called to do, the Lord will be there to make it happen. It is not about us. We are nothing; He is everything. Moses was just a murderer. Moses ran away rather than face the consequences. Now God is calling him to face the ruler who wanted to carry out justice. But the Lord will be with him this time. It will not be Moses standing by himself. The God of all creation will be there with him. And as we look forward in Moses’ life, God shows Himself strong in some very powerful ways. Moses has nothing to fear. When the Lord is with him, Power is present.
